The “chain email” is the electronic equivalent of the “chain letter,” which has existed in various forms over the centuries. Some were written as pure hoaxes, some were arrogantly religious, pretending to speak for God. Many included warnings that failure to pass along the letter could result in bad fortune – even death. All these played to human weaknesses: unreasonable fear, greed, envy, presumption, and superstition. Sadly, the chain emailers continue to stuff our email-boxes, and often get us to open their messages by including pretty pictures, poems, or inspirational stories. But these emails can do great harm. This topic provides a Biblical perspective that identifies the nature of many chain emails as the sin of witchcraft.
