Mark 4:18-19 contains one of the gravest warnings ever given the Church. While teaching on the four types of soil, Jesus said, “Some people are like seeds planted among thorn bushes. They hear the Word and follow it, but eventually the message is crowded out by the cares of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for nice things, so no crop is produced.” The Christian life was never designed to be a life of ease because Jesus instructed His followers to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). And so, working together to meet both natural and spiritual needs is not merely religion but a demonstration of the love of Christ, which is the essence of Christianity.
